The Director of the Department of National Unity in
the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Emmanuel Bambe, has
urged communities in Nkhotakota District to uphold peace and unity in order to
curb the rising cases of mob justice.
Speaking on
Wednesday, 11 June 2026, during a stakeholder engagement meeting in the
district, Bambe said the increasing incidents of mob justice are undermining
development efforts in the country.
He said the
initiative is crucial in advancing the aspirations of Malawi 2063 through
positive transformation at the community level.

"We believe communities will be able to effectively play
their role in promoting peace, unity, civic responsibility and development
within their respective areas," said Bambe.
Meanwhile, Community
Policing Coordinator Inspector Graciano Chirombo said the police will ensure
that perpetrators of mob justice are brought to book to prevent further
escalation of the malpractice.
Chirombo disclosed
that police have so far recorded four cases of mob justice in the district, a
development he said calls for intensified efforts to address the problem.
In his remarks,
Council Chairperson Fitton Khofi commended the engagement, describing it as an
eye-opener that will help communities follow proper procedures when resolving
disputes and misunderstandings.

The Ministry of
Local Government, through the Department of National Unity and in collaboration
with NICE Trust, brought together chiefs, security officers, youths and church
leaders to discuss and develop strategies aimed at promoting peace and unity in
the district.
