Umunthu FM, under the Community Voices for Legal Reforms project, has embarked on a capacity-building campaign aimed at training healthcare workers in the district on Post Abortion Care (PAC) services.
Speaking over the weekend at Kaluluma Health Centre, the project's Field Officer Collings Kalivute said the move is aimed at strengthening the management of abortion-related complications and improving access to quality reproductive healthcare services.
Kalivute said they embarked on the initiative in response to the increasing cases of teenage pregnancies that have contributed to unsafe abortions in Kasungu.
"Equipping nurses with the necessary knowledge and skills will help improve the quality of care provided to affected women and girls," he said.
Commenting on the development, Kasungu District Health Office Post Abortion Care Coordinator Dorice Mazunda Gausi commended Umunthu FM for complementing government efforts to improve healthcare service delivery.
Mazunda Gausi said the training is timely amid rising cases of unsafe abortions in the district, arguing that routine refresher trainings are essential to keep healthcare workers updated on Post Abortion Care services. She disclosed that most unsafe abortion cases being recorded involve teenage girls.
The training forms part of the Community Voices for Legal Reforms project being implemented by Umunthu FM with financial support from Amplify Change in the Traditional Authorities of Kaomba, Mwase, and Kaluluma.
