MHRC, partners all for inclusive digital Access to Information

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), in collaboration with the Media Council of Malawi (MCM) and the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), says there is a need to tackle challenges limiting access to information by promoting inclusivity in the use of digital technologies.

The call comes as part of efforts to enhance access to information for the effective implementation of Malawi’s Agenda 2063.

The remarks were made on Tuesday in Lilongwe during a press briefing outlining preparations for this year’s commemoration of the International Day of Universal Access to Information.

In her remarks, MHRC Executive Secretary, Habiba Osman, underscored the Commission’s commitment to advocating for the fundamental right of individuals to access information.

She disclosed that financial constraints remain a major challenge, despite the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that advance technology.

"Despite the government's commitment to advancing technology, limited resources continue to challenge the effective implementation of access to information initiatives," she explained.

On his part, MCM Executive Director, Moses Kaufa, highlighted the importance of responsible information sharing, adding that the Council is working to educate people on the right to access information while encouraging institutions to comply with the law and guiding citizens toward credible sources of information.

"As MCM we are directing people to credible sources of information and encouraging institutions to comply with access to information requirements, said Kaufa.

This year’s commemoration will be held under the theme: “Empowering Communities through Digital Literacy: Access to Information for All.” The theme aligns with the global call to ensure access to environmental information in the digital age as a pillar of transparency, accountability, and sustainable development.

The event is scheduled for 10th October in Mzuzu, and will feature award presentations and various activities aimed at raising awareness on access to information and special attention will be given to the inclusion of marginalized groups such as women, the elderly, and youth.
