The National Children’s Commission (NCC) has appealed for the full protection of children during and after the elections.
Speaking on Friday during a press briefing at the Commission’s offices in Lilongwe, NCC Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe said this is a critical period that requires all stakeholders to safeguard children’s rights.
He highlighted key measures, commitments, and guidelines aimed at ensuring that children are not abused, exploited, or exposed to harm during political activities, campaigns, and beyond.
Kondowe also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children to prevent them from lingering around polling stations, by saying that election environments can be unpredictable.
“We are making this appeal to protect children’s rights. Most importantly, parents and guardians must take full responsibility for their children before, during, and after the elections, as violence can erupt at any time,” Kondowe said.
He further called on political contestants to accept election results or follow proper legal procedures to address grievances, emphasizing that peace must prevail under the rule of law.
“We don’t want competitors to use violence as a mode of expressing their grievances,” he added.
The NCC also underscored the importance of raising awareness through media coverage and disseminating accurate information as a way of strengthening the protection of children’s rights.
