The Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has announced the official results for the 2025 presidential election from the 13 councils in the country.
The results show tight contention between the ruling Malawi congress party-MCP and opposition democratic progressive party-DPP with the United Transformation Movement UTM claiming third position.
However, the early results have shown presidential candidate for the DPP professor Arthur Peter Mutharika leading by 501, 897 votes seconded by Lazarus Chakwera of MCP with 153, 137 votes.
The United Transformation Movement UTM presidential candidate Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has so far pocketed cumulative 49,733 votes.
As it stands, results from the 23 councils are yet to be vetted, with Malawi Electoral Commission remaining with a day and hours to hit the legal 8-day period for the release of final presidential results.
Meanwhile, speaking during a press briefing on Sunday night, MEC Chairperson justice Annabel Mtalimanja assured the public that the commission is working around the clock to make sure that the results are declared within the legal timeframe.
Mtalimanja has also condemned the conduct by some political parties and candidates for declaring themselves winner of the race, warning it has potential to cause public disorder when the commission declares winner.
She has urged parties to desist from inciting violence by deliberately making inflammatory remarks while results management are in due process by the commission.
The Malawi Electoral Commission has until tomorrow Tuesday this week to declare winner of the presidential election as stipulated in the electoral laws.
